Breckenridge Colorado

September 06, 2013  •  Leave a Comment

Was blessed by my good friend Christian to be able to sneak away for a short holiday this summer to Breckenridge Colorado. While 106 degrees scorched the McKinney Texas landscape, you can bet I was certainly glad to wake up to 50 and the smell of pine in the clean mountain air. It was a wonderfully restful and thoroughly enjoyable time spent with Christian and his friends Keith and Dan. After a summer of straight work and the emotional intensity of missionary work in Uganda, it was such a huge blessing to be able to decompress in luxury and get a little perspective.

This was the view from our Condo patio: Riding the Gondolas up to the top of Peak 8

The photographer got to get out and play:

After a nice morning's activities, the rain came in daily almost like clockwork at mid -afternoon. Loved sitting by the condo windows listening to the rain and enjoying the concomitant temperature dip.

Love how this looks like we're a rock band or something...

NTPC Off Camera Flash

Ok so a large number of these are not in fact OCF. (I'm such a rebel - shooting natural light at a flash workshop).

Rather, they manifest my love for prime lenses and natural light, but it was just too much to pass up photographing the lovely Ms. Sharri a friend whom I met at church and recruited to model... for obvious reasons.

Models: Sharri A, Taylor M., Devaughn H.

Uganda

Africa arrests you.

It stops you in whatever track of life you're in, spins you around a bit, and resets your perspective. From the ubiquitous red dirt, to the abyssal, high-contrast, searching eyes of the African people, to the delicious meat on a stick from a roadside grill, everthing about it for the first time traveler takes you out of what you know.

I was blessed to be a part of a mission team from Preston Trail Community Church in mid June to journey to Uganda in Africa to serve in several ministries. For the first part of the 11 days, we served in Children's ministries one titled Homecoming Foodstep serving the children of Kampiringisa (a children's remand center) and another visiting Serving His Children, a ministry founded by an American Renee Bach, which helps malnourished children back to health and educates their families about proper nutrition. This was my first time visiting, and I was graciously blessed by my church, the Bingham family, Mark & Sharon Fowler, Michelle Kiehn, My God-mother and Grand Uncle, Pat & Deb Crane, Phil Crane, Jeff & Jody Crane, Eileen Ebert-Aguilar, my teaching friends: Lannis Nelson, The McFarland family, and my beloved friends Meredith Douglas, Brittney Caswell, Mary Duran, Lauren Liles, Gwen Guess, and many others in prayer and support with the ability to follow God's lead on this.

This is my favorite image from the trip:

The simple joy as a little one plays with a paper airplane on a sunny day at HomeComing in Uganda June 2013.

This is my second favorite image:

Pastor John, attendee at the Hessed pastor's conference.

Coming back from Africa is difficult to do without questioning the mass of posessions one returns to and feeling the weight of the superfluity.  Nevertheless, it was a huge blessing to see the fruits of the church's continued ministry there, to see smiles on the faces of the children at the homecoming, shoes on their feet, and toys in their hands.

At homecoming, I met a young man who sat with me and recounted from memory the stories of Genesis through Exodus. I spent close to 2 hours sitting with him and listening to him; it was a really special moment and I won't forget him as long as I live.

I also met a young pastor named John who works with the children at Homecoming.

He contacted me via email after I returned and told me that he and his wife have been praying for me; for my life and for my new business adventure. He told me that he saw in me the spirit of Gideon which meant that he saw me as a mighty man of valor who, despite small beginnings, has a path to greatness ahead of me. I hope that my images of Africa can serve as a small stepping stone on that path and bring glory to Him who both made it possible for me to go and created all the blessings I encountered.

BH Music Studios Portrait Session

Got to hang out with a cool bunch of America's future rock stars and do a photoshoot for BHMusic Studios.

Loved seeing this young lady's confidence emerge when she got the mic in her hands and started singing!

All glory to Him, the giver of gifts!

So stinkin' cute!

Love this:

Lebh Shomea

Lebh Shomea is a Catholic eremitical (has to do with isolation and hermitage) retreat campus located in Sarita, Texas about an hour from Corpus Christi. I had the opportunity to go and visit my mother who is now employed there in her retirement from being a fulltime school librarian. The "big house" as it's called is a beautiful building with some amazing surrounding landscape which include prayer walks and prayer spots. The community values silence and people don't even speak during communal meals, which is a little weird at first, but then becomes quite nice after a time as you have more time to contemplate and not have to feel pressured to concoct conversational topics or be especialy sociable. It's a great place to connect with God in a context of some beautiful scenery which I've tried to capture and share with my images from the trip I took during Spring Break. Personal projects have certainly been on the back burner for the past few months, but I'm really happy  to see this one finished! Enjoy!

One of my mom's primary duties is working in the book bindery. She uses an oldtime book press to create the bindings.

OH my how I would die to do a bridal session in this mansion!  My favorite room: A great chair for reading some Yeats and watching the wind blow the trees.

Of course, God is everywhere, but if you want to get away from the World to reconnect with Him, this is a great place to do it.  Early morning perambulations:

I was blessed to get a personal tour of the chapel of the little children from Father Francis Kelly.

Worth getting up super early to catch the sunrise at the coast a few miles down the road? I think so!  The Doves:

A REALLY tough shot to get!

And you shall seek me, and find me, when you shall

search for me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13

Jim & Christina's Engagement

Had a wonderful toasty warm time in Richardson with a beautiful couple Jim & Christina whom I was blessed to meet through my church.

I finally asked you to dance
On the last slow song
Beneath that moon that was really a disco ball
I can still feel my head on your shoulder
And hoping that song would never be over

I brushed your curls back so I could see your eyes

And the way you moved me was like you were reading my mind
I can still feel you lean into kiss me
I can't help but wonder if you ever miss me

This past weekend, I got to hang out and create some images with Deval, Kajal, Radhika, and Adhi at their home in Arlington. I miss the days when I had as much energy as little Radhika!

Had an "extreme fun" time in Plano on Mother's day morning celebrating a beautiful mother and her family. The lovely Ms. Lori and her little ones sweet Calista, Bradston, and Ashton.

The pouter, the smiler, and the thinker:
